Denis Perret-Gentil
Swiss artist, born in 1959.
He trained at the Lausanne art school, and has been practicing painting, engraving and especially sculpture for 40 years.
Denis Perret-Gentil's ceramic characters reveal timeless caricatures of humankind. They wait, look at the sky, their expression stops dead. They have overly large feet, an imposing paunch, a long neck, their exaggerated imperfections contribute to surreal, intimate and touching portraits. His characters are raw, full of humor and tenderness.
“What is very interesting in the works of Denis Perret-Gentil is this desire to create stories with his characters.
The human figure is his main source of inspiration. In the sculpture ofRower, Denis Perret-Gentil plays with his character with a backwards cap and on symbols. This rower is a bit rebellious, he rows physically, but perhaps he also rows a little in his life. Is he adrift, lost, or does he know exactly where he's going? Denis Perret-Gentil will say nothing about it. It's up to the viewer to discover it, to discover themselves through this sculpture." C.Y
