Edouard Marcel Sandoz (1881-1971)
Born in Basel, educated in Switzerland, Edouard Marcel Sandoz worked mainly in Paris where he settled in 1908. Sculptor of men and animals, he expressed himself through bronze, ceramics, direct stone cutting . Painter of flowers and landscapes, he was also a tireless draftsman and watercolorist.
Its motto :“In art, you have to love everything, nature, science, your neighbor…”
Its characteristics: intellectual curiosity, technical rigor. His freedom of expression was based on the mastery of classical techniques, knowledge of materials, the daily search for new tools, the opening of new areas, the study and in-depth knowledge of his models.
His very personal style, developed over the course of a long career, bears the mark of the Art Nouveau period in which he strongly fits. The animal dominance of his sculpted work led him to give life to the Société Française des Animaliers in 1933.
His commitment to serving his fellow artists led him to chair the Baron Taylor Association for more than thirty years, to found L'Œuvre des Enfants d'Artistes and to participate in the creation of the Cité des Arts in Paris.
His talent and his merits earned him in France to be elected Member of the Academy of Fine Arts, and decorated with the rank of Commander in the orders of the Legion of Honor and of Arts and Letters.
